Pussy Riot Russian Dolls by Keeley WynnIf it was the headline Madonna Splits Pussy that made you read this opening paragraph – stop – it’s not what you think. Pussy Riot, the one-time world famous protest band have split and it’s Madonna what done it – well sort of.
The group, following an appearance on stage in New York with Madonna, disowned the two of the three members arrested and jailed in August 2012.
It had been suggested that the pair Nadezhda Tolokonnikova and Maria Alyokhina who were released from their Siberina labour camp just before Christmas 2013 were enjoying the celebrity limelight a bit too much.
But could you blame them? After all, they did survive the deep winter of a Russian Labourcamp; endure hunger and being covered in faeces whilst under the cosh not to mention 18-hours working days and according to smuggled documents ‘other’ horrendous conditions.
Untitled by Miguel IvorraBoth have ignored the expulsion and remain extremely vocal campaigners for both social and penal reform amongst many other things and are staunch opponents of Russian President Putin.
Despite the personal sacrifice, continued activism and international media profile the largely unknown ‘other’ members of the group advocated a parting of the ways.  In a letter to the duo which effectively leaves the best known pussies out in the cold they were accused of straying too far away from core beliefs.
What this will mean for the movement remains to be seen – but at Guerilla Galleries we’re still celebrating the girls the way they were/are in their multi-coloured balaclava glory.

We have work by Keeley Wynn, Miguel Ivorra and Ben Mellor all celebrating the Russian female protest band. All work is available to own now, so buy before they split again if they haven’t already done so.
